lyrics

Million to One

Granddad was a war hero as far as I could see
He never won no pins or stripes that don’t matter much to me
Loved his wife till’ the day he died told my brother to do his best
When that cancer took his bones then we laid his final rest

One thing he told me when I was young.
You can’t afford to be looking back
I can’t explain why he left the way he done
But a man like him is a million to one.

That green-eyed girl got the best of me my heart she saw right through
All around us the world was dyin’ our love would make it new
I was scared I’d been there trembling on my knees
So I asked her dad for her hand he taught me how to see.

Said “son this train it goes all around. Over hills and through the storms”
You punch your ticket and hold close the ones you love.
‘Cause a hand like hers is a million to one

Sandra she’d seen everything the world could throw at her
Two kids three jobs and a broken home drowning out her words
They called all cars when it burned down it burned right to the ground
You could hear the sirens blazin’ Sandra couldn’t hear a sound

Newspapers asked her where she had been
She worked a double until sun
The kids weren’t home to feel the gas lines explode
The chances were a million to one

I remember when I fought my dad I was screaming on that day
Said “you can stay or you can go it doesn’t matter anyway”
I stood my ground and he backed down we didn’t see much eye to eye
But when we told him of our plans it was the first I heard him cry

Tears fell from my father’s eyes that day
I think about what mother said
There ain’t nothing to make our love come undone
A son like you is a million to one

I don’t know if the world was made in six days or ten more
All I know is the love I’m shown we can’t ask for much more
And if I’m standing on this earth I know each breath I take is blessed
I hope each breath it brings me closer to the ones I love the best

And if my granddad were alive today I’d like to hear him say well done
The world brings troubles with each new morning sun but a life like yours is a million to one
The answer is a million to one.
